A Story About Distracted Driving
This month we have a showcase submission that shares a tragic story on an issue that we care very deeply about here at EZ Lip – Distracted Driving & the consequences of not paying attention on the road.
The story has an important lesson though and features a great car from a great fan, so we encourage you read the entire post.
Name: Billy Brown
Car: 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart
Name of Build: Ams_ralliart
Dream Car: The car I own
My name is Billy and I am disabled from someone who crashed in to me head-on while driving 50mph. The driver who hit me was texting and driving. I do a lot of shows now to share my story about being distracted while driving, and how we should stop and think of the consequences.
I would like to place emphasis on distracted driving and how dangerous it really is for one’s own safety and others on the road.
Distracted Driving is something I believe we’re all guilty of at one time or another and is something that can easily be prevented. Whether it be by turning off your phone while driving, or buying a cheap Bluetooth headset so that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.
After being hit head on I suffered a number of serious injuries, which broke both of my legs, crushed my left foot, and broke both bones in my left forearm.
My right leg had a hole blown out of the bottom half of it. The doctors were very close to removing the leg but were able to save it by taking the Latissimus dorsi muscle from my left shoulder. Now I have a metal rod from my hip to my knee then from my knee to my ankle in my right leg, as well as plates and screws in my left foot.
One thing that many of us tend to forget is that our actions on the driving don’t only affect us. Everyone else who is on the road with us is put in harm’s way when we decide to make unsafe decisions.
The person who hit me had no intention to hurt anyone, they were just checking a text message – a normal daily action that many of us don’t think twice about. But because they decided to do it while driving, they took their eyes off the road one second too many and now I have to live with the consequences the rest of my life.
I share this story so that you can hear from my own personal experience, and keep it in mind the next time you feel like checking your phone, or taking your eyes off the road.
Billy recently won First place at Carlisle import nationals. and every show he attends is an attempt to spread the word about the consequences of distracted driving.
